Most wedding professionals will ask a prospective bride and groom what their wedding theme is. Themes change with the times and help to personalize a wedding. Current wedding themes like a woodland forest theme can reflect a couple’s love of the Pacific NW, nature, gnomes, the movie Twilight or woodland fairies. Beach themes are common and can include sand ceremonies, seashells and beach grass and reflect a couple’s love of the ocean and nature.
Some themes go a little bit more outside of the box. Such as this couple who dressed up as Shrek and Fiona for a Shrek-themed wedding.
Whatever makes you happy I say. I learned years ago that a couple’s special day is not my own and my opinion of it doesn’t count. And it shouldn’t. I had my day, my way. Now, I stress how important it is to brides and grooms to be able to experience it that way too. No regrets. No turning back. Some of the most fun weddings I have been a part of helping with have been weddings where the couple displayed their personalities in the most unusual ways. Not traditional at all.
One such wedding was a sci-fi themed wedding. Although the bride and groom did not dress up in outfits for the ceremony, they added touches to their day that included their common passion. They entered the room with their free hands holding up Vulcan signs. They made a video of a fake light saber fight for their slideshow presentation. They had fun. It was catchy. Even though guests laughed, it was not at them, but at how much fun they were having together. You could see that they loved each other. And when it comes down to it, that’s the whole reason they are getting hitched in the first place.
So if you want to dress up for your wedding like Shrek, Fiona, a Storm Trooper, Mary Poppins, a vampire, Cinderella, Tinkerbell–who am I to complain? It’s your day and your true selves should shine through. If it’s a little “wacky” who cares? The people that will be attending already have a good idea of how “wacky” you are. Don’t try to pretend to be someone else. I say, go with it! It will definitely be what everyone is talking about, and maybe for years to come.
